Consistently superb and formidably prolific, Grayson Gilmour’s work as an acclaimed film composer, NZMA-nominated solo musician and member of cult post-hardcore group So So Modern has seen him stretch his wingspan wide. His signature elegant, inventive composition and innovative musicianship throws graceful shadows on all he lends his ear to, his penchant for lush harmonic explorations of acoustic and digital soundscapes the cornerstone of his reputation.
His 2014 record Infinite Life!, nominated for ‘Best Alternative Album’ at the 2014 NZ Music Awards, and the Taite Music Prize, was released while completing his Masters in Composition at the NZSM. “Who else writes tunes as achingly beautiful as these?” sighed Nick Bollinger in The Listener. “Not many people around here, that’s for sure!”
Two years later and Grayson is on the brink of unveiling his new record Otherness - due out July 14 on Flying Nun Records. The first glimpse of the album came with the gentle dancefloor shuffle and rallying mantra of ‘Hundred Waters’, released with a 360° spatial audio-video directed by Parallel Teeth. “The yearning, layered vocals and string quartet dovetail nicely with recent uncanny-choral strains”, said The Spinoff.
Second single ‘Blow Back’ is an immersive bed of lush strings and hocketing synths; a late-night (or early morning) love song, bodily motions abstracted as Gilmour’s voice whispers, “exhale”.
Regular Grayson collaborator, artist Henrietta Harris, has taken her delicate hand yet again to the watercolour artwork, as well as to the album cover itself. While the offical website for Otherness is a further expression of his interest in interactive art-forms; a beautiful and intuitive platform offering listeners the chance to toy with samples from the album and create their own Otherness loops.
Otherness will be available from July 14 on Vinyl LP, CD and digital, along with a very limited special edition LP. Featuring the wondrous artwork of Henrietta Harris, this drool-worthy special edition LP comes not only on milky-clear vinyl, but includes an exclusive layer of artwork, printed on a vellum sleeve to compliment the cover - a must for fans of GG and Henrietta Harris alike!
