BEAUTIFUL THINGS PLAYLIST
WEEK 31st OCTOBER - 4th NOVEMBER
MAKAYA McCRAVEN - ‘THE FOURS’
Hypnotic, looping brass coat the track with warmth atop the earthy tones of harps and double bass that curve and wrap around his slinky, laid-back beat. Makaya McCraven achieves his own spin on jazz with effortless flair.
You can find this track on Makaya McCraven’s new album In These Times via the Flying Nun Record Shop here.
OKAY KAYA - ‘JOLENE FROM HER OWN PERSPECTIVE’
Okay, we all know the famous Dolly Parton song, but have you ever been curious about Jolene’s side of the story? Well, luckily for us, Okay Kaya has crafted a unique depiction of Jolene’s perspective, swooning in defence throughout a charming 6/8 ditty. This is from her brand new album SAP.
You can find this track on Okay Kaya’s upcoming album SAP, available for preorder via the Flying Nun Record Shop here.
FRANCIS R - ‘TREASURE OF THIS WORLD’
Hailing from Aotearoa, francis r has been releasing indie machine-rock music since 2020, aside from playing with Vera Ellen in her band Maple Syrup. This song was instantly catchy - I love the mechanical drums imputed into the otherwise very organic sounding song, his voice and guitar performing with grit and confidence. The entire EP is worth checking out!
You can find this track on Francis R's latest EP via Spotify here.
TINARIWEN - ‘À L’HISTOIRE’
This track is available on a newly reissued Tinariwen album, Kel Tinariwen, available via the Flying Nun Record Shop here
AMAMELIA - ‘C’EST CHIC’
'C'est chic' gels together a joyful assortment of samples and synths amongst four-on-the-floor kick drums, tripping jungle patterns and beguine beats. Just like her previous output 'Colourbox' and remaining in-line with the album's playful name and bright, graphic colour scheme, 'C'est chic' captures a carefree energy that remains down to earth despite its sometimes otherwordly themes, and reminds us not to take life too seriously.
Amamelia’s new album Bananamelia! Is out now! Find it on Bandcamp here.
MOUNT KIMBIE - ‘SATELLITE 9’
You can find this track on Mount Kimbie’s new album MK 3.5: Die Cuts/City Planning (out today!) via the Flying Nun Record Shop here.
STEF ANIMAL - ‘IN THE PINES’
Stef Animal’s hauntingly beautiful album Top Gear is finally getting the vinyl treatment and we’re stoked about it. ‘In The Pines’ captures a beautiful space amongst vocal and synth layers; a slow burning triumph which sounds like it's fresh off the stage of the Bang Bang Bar in Twin Peaks.
You can pre-order Stef Animal’s upcoming reissue of Top Gear via the Flying Nun Record Shop here.
ERNY BELLE - ‘ISLAND TIME’
You can find this track on Erny Belle’s album Venus Is Home, being repressed soon via Flying Nun Records. Order it here.
SJD - ‘A POCKETFUL OF CHANGE’
You can find this track on SJD’s new album Sweetheart, available via the Flying Nun Record Shop here.
PAVEMENT - ‘SPIT ON A STRANGER’
