Leaping Tiger, A.K.A Jacob Park, is a bit of a musical prodigy in Aotearoa's musical stratosphere. His 2021 album, Soulsleep, which followed up the fantastic Porcelain Orca Whales, just proves his multi-faceted talent. He has now shared the music video for 'Gooey', a standout from the album.
The song, which explores themes of envy and all the gut-wrenching and teeth-baring sensations that come with it, is a bass-driven bop with Leaping Tiger's signature synth sounds glittering above. Unlike a lot of his other songs, which are instrumental or featuring guest singers or rappers (Imugi 이무기, Church & AP), his vocal chops feature heavily, painting the emotion a very vivid bright green.
The video was directed by Oscar Keys and Jacob Park himself and supported by NZ On Air. The colour green is prominent in the visual moodboard, presenting itself in an array of different settings, sometimes subtly, sometimes conspicuously. Leaping Tiger appears in many locations as a different character each time, displaying both the scope of his emotional battle and showing off the incredible work of the whole creative team, especially Ezra Simons (Earth Tongue) who shot the video. It is an other-worldly glimpse into Leaping Tiger's genius as an artist, and an exciting visual experience that matches the song perfectly.
