Today Ōtepoti emo-noise-rock quartet Dale Kerrigan have released their debut album, noise bitch, via trace / untrace records. Take a listen:
Dale Kerrigan is the newest songwriting project of Shlee Nicholls (Mary Berry, Flesh Bug), accompanied by Joel Field (Porpoise) on guitar, Connor Blackie (Fazed on a Pony, Koizilla) on bass, and brother Josh Nicholls (Space Bats Attack!, Fazed on a Pony, Bathysphere, Asta Rangu, Koizilla, etc.) on drums. Inspired by free noise and sound artists such as Kim Gordon and Gabby Strong, noise bitch is a feminist ode to women.
For Shlee, the album is a redefinition of her adolescent ideas of womanhood, exploring themes of anxiety, friendship, and the patriarchy. This comes across in the melding of the lyrical content with punchy-as-fuck riffs – mostly it sounds like the kind of songs that a teenage girl would write if she were empowered to.
The band are about to head on tour with Wiri Donna (who recently played in store at Flying Nun), presented by Eyegum. Check out the dates and grab your tickets from Under The Radar:
