LUCKY BOY / PHOTO BY NICOLA LUEY
'Burned Out' serves as a gentle lullaby for the overtired and overworked. Woozy synths and lo-fi drum machines swing softly amongst Crystal Choi of Phoebe Rings' dreamy, enchanting vocals. Lucky Boy^, AKA Simeon Kavanagh-Vincent contributes his signature hushed melodies — which drift far away as much as they closely whisper. It is wonderful duet, gifting our ears a moment of respite amongst life's current noise.
This song is the first of a 5-song EP of collaborative songs coming later in 2023, born out of a spell of writers' block.
“I had a lot of fun recording about 30 different releases ranging from singles to EP's to Albums (all done rather quickly and haphazardly), but the moment I decided to do something a little more substantial I froze." Kavanagh-Vincent notes. "I know a tonne of very talented and lovely humans and the least that could come from writing a song with any of them is a fun, low stress afternoon or two. If I record something with ideas from someone else I am much more likely to be happy with the end result. My goal with all of the collaborative songs was to get as close to 50/50 on the input as possible, I didn't want the end result to be my song ‘featuring’ someone else but instead a song that could have started with either one of us and progressed to a fully fledged piece.”
Accompanying the single is a music video directed by Abigail Edgen (made with the support of NZ On Air), which follows the duo on a drive on the streets of Auckland in the hazy hours that teeter between late night and early morning.
Check out the video before, and show Lucky Boy^ some love on Bandcamp. We can't wait to see what other collaborations unfold from this upcoming project.
