Tāmaki-based outfit, Soft Bait, have untied their second single, 'True Stories' - an electrifying post punk song paired with an equivalently charged-up music video (edited by band member Ezra Simons) featuring vocalist Josh Hunter encased in an aluminium foil-plastered room. Despite how claustrophobic it looks in there, he seems perfectly ok dancing and declaiming thoughts on conspiracy and misinformation. And that's when you realise that the shiny, all encompassing foil and his too-cool moves are simply a reflection on how easy it is to be surrounded by false claims that we can be so comfortable absorbing.
“Based on a true story? Probably true? Sounds about right? 'True Stories' embodies the rant of a conspiracy theorist that has seen the “truth” through many hours on the internet. It’s about the eager willingness to accept any article as fact to suit one’s narrative, and the compulsive need to let everyone know the “real truth.
We wanted to have a bit of fun with this video by giving ourselves the constraint of shooting it in a single shot... We loved the idea of a completely tin foiled room, it’s such a synonymous material with conspiracy theories and to cover an entire room in it, removes itself from any specific time and place. We leant into the hand-made aesthetic (something from a b-grade movie), but the result became something aesthetically quite striking.” — guitarist Patrick Hickley
