SOUL | FUNK
“Really, what I'm trying to do is make soul music, but I don't even think of it as a genre. It's more of a feeling”..... - Kaytranada
Soul music, which boasted pride in being black, originated in the African American
community of the USA in the late 1950s from its roots in gospel music and rhythm and
blues. During the Civil Rights Movement of the early ‘60’s the labels Motown, Atlantic and Stax pushed the new-found African-American consciousness.
Soul, Funk, R&B Music on Vinyl LP
From those roots, Soul music gradually expanded to create Funk, and by the early 1970s, had been influenced by psychedelic and progressive rock. The ‘80’s saw the Disco explosion and during the 90’s Neo Soul developed which led to the 2000’s and
contemporary R&B, which sounded very different from the original rhythm and blues style, incorporating elements of pop, soul, funk, hip hop, and electronic music.
