The Soft Plastics are a Te Whanganui-a-Tara/Wellington band who recently released an excellent album Saturn Return - get it here. Accurately described as garage pop with a nostalgic twist, Soft Plastics expertly blend melody and groove with moments of noise and power. Taking influence from 2010's indie guitar bands and alternative bands of recent years, the group are accomplished at converting fuzzy riffs and shoegazey reverb into devotional (and occasionally noisy) indie pop hooks. If you are in the area, the band are playing their Wellington album release show tonight (2nd June 2023) at Meow.
O & The Mo were originally a duo, but they have now expanded to a four piece band, whose members are spread between Wellington, Nelson and Australia. The subtle and understated O sound hinges on minimalist swing, folky acoustic instruments and smoky vocals. Think early Cat Power mixed with a bit of Jazz, or Tiny Ruins in the summertime. Check them below.
MĀ and The Fly Hunnies welcomes all to a safe place to bob your purari head. And listening to 'Rere Cruise', its pretty hard not to do that. This is one of the larger bands we've featured on What Was That Thing? - eight members! Not only that, but MĀ has everything from turntables to congas, sax to shakers. And it sounds great! If you are a fan of 90s hip-hop, intelligent lyrics and big chunky grooves - then MĀ and The Fly Hunnies are for you.
Sure Boy are a Wellington indie pop four member band who cite artists such as The Beths and Ladyhawke as influences, but also wouldn't sound out of place on a Dazed and Confused soundtrack. In other words, hints of late 70's roller-skate glam rock - think the Runaways, Joan Jett and cool bell bottom glittery stuff like that. Sure Boy are central to the local Wellington music scene, preforming regularly around the city, as well as notably performing at Rhythm and Vines and notably opening for the aforementioned Beths.
