Following the lush, syrupy sounds of Amamelia's (AKA Amelia Berry) recent single 'Colourbox' (an all-round favourite song and video to surface this year), the Tāmaki Makaurau-based producer and musician continues the saga of whimsical sounds and euphoric beatscapes with her new single, 'C'est chic', the final release from her upcoming album Bananamelia!.
'C'est chic' gels together a joyful assortment of samples and synths amongst four-on-the-floor kick drums, tripping jungle patterns and beguine beats. Just like her previous output 'Colourbox' and remaining in-line with the album's playful name and bright, graphic colour scheme, 'C'est chic' captures a carefree energy that remains down to earth despite its sometimes otherwordly themes, and reminds us not to take life too seriously. The song is paired with another fantastic visual accompaniment that brings each and every sound sound to life, thanks to the creative brains of Sports Team and the help of NZ On Air.
"The concept for the mood of the track was that cheesy swinging sixties Parisian style, so I felt a name like C’est Chic captured that perfectly," says Berry. "Honestly - it was called C'est Chic before I’d written a single note."
'When I was writing C'est Chic I really wanted to get at that particular throwback disco sound that was floating around in the 90's and early 2000's - I’m thinking Yukarin’ Disco by Yukari Fresh or the end of Como un Fan by La Casa Azul, maybe even a little Fantastic Plastic Machine type beat. It just had to be something breezy, something you could whistle but like…..really fast."
With 'C’est Chic' now released, Berry remarks "Honestly, it feels surreal how close we are now to the album release. I can’t wait for everyone to hear it!"
And it is close! Bananamelia! is Amamelia's sophomore album, coming to us on November 3 via Sunreturn both digitally and on LP. You can preorder it here.
